Learn more30 Degrees+ Essentials & Tips: Skincare During a Heat Wave
Anyone who’s as obsessed with the weather app as my best friend is knows: It’s going to be hot this week. We’re talking about temperatures over 30 degrees in large parts of Switzerland—and honestly, that’s a lot of work for our bodies. We want you to get through the next few days as comfortably as possible. That’s why we’ve put together everything you really need to know about skincare during a heat wave.
How a Heat Wave Affects Your Skin
When it gets hot, our bodies constantly try to regulate their temperature. That’s why we sweat. In the process, we lose water—and, depending on how much we sweat, minerals as well. This makes our skin more sensitive than usual, especially now in the summer.
So hydration is important. But not just from the inside. Your skin needs support right now, too: gentle cleansing, light moisturizing—and please don’t skip everything just because your skin feels oily. That’s exactly the mistake most people make, and we’ll talk more about that in a moment.
1. SPF is not optional
Make sure to use broad-spectrum protection. This means that your SPF protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are particularly relevant for premature skin aging and pigmentation, while UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn—both can really take a toll on your skin.
If you're prone to acne scars or hyperpigmentation, sun protection is especially important for you. UV rays can make dark spots more pronounced and cause them to remain visible longer—which is exactly the opposite of what you want.
Our current favorite for the face: Glow Drops. For the body: All Day Sunscreen. And remember: Reapply every two hours, or right after swimming or if you've been sweating heavily.
Your parting counts, too.
People often forget this, but your scalp, hairline, and forehead are extremely exposed. So seriously: apply sunscreen to your entire face, including your hairline. If you're going to be outside for a while, apply a thin layer of SPF to your part or wear a hat.
2. The Truth About Hydration You Should Know.
Oily skin can still be dehydrated. And if you dry out your skin too much, it can feel even oilier, tighter, or more irritated—the opposite of what you actually want. A routine for hot days:
- Start your evening routine with a balm or oil cleanser. Massage it in for one minute, emulsify with water, and rinse off.
- Follow that with a second, gentle cleansing step —pH-balanced, non-drying, preferably milky or containing gentle clarifying ingredients.
- A lightweight serum that hydrates and supports the skin barrier.
- A light moisturizer —even if your skin feels oily. That's exactly when it can help.
3. Hydration from the inside is just as important as hydration from the outside
We all know we should drink enough water. Fresh, water-rich foods can also help support the body from the inside out: cucumber, zucchini, leafy greens, mint, cilantro, and a fresh lime dressing.
They keep you hydrated, feel light, and make it easier to take good care of yourself—even on hot days.
Our favorite heatwave ritual: A fresh summer bowl
You'll need:
- Iceberg lettuce, cut into thin strips
- Cucumber, finely diced or thinly sliced
- Tomatoes, quartered
- Edamame
- A handful of cilantro, roughly chopped
- A few mint leaves, finely chopped
Miso-lime dressing - Protein of your choice
Here's how:
Chop everything into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Add the edamame and your choice of protein, pour the miso dressing over the top, and mix well.
And there you have it—your Summer Bowl, which is light, fresh, and feels really good—exactly what our bodies often need on hot days.
